Australia Introduces New Core Skills Occupation List to Streamline Skilled Migration
The Australian Government has unveiled the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), effective as of 3 December 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s skilled migration reforms. This newly introduced list aims to address Australia’s evolving labour market needs and simplify the visa application process for skilled workers and employers alike.

Why the CSOL Matters
The CSOL replaces the outdated and overly complex occupation lists previously used in the temporary skilled visa program. It is a single, consolidated list that reflects comprehensive labour market analysis and feedback from stakeholders, including Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA). Covering 456 occupations, the CSOL ensures streamlined access to Australia’s skilled migration pathways, aligning with the nation’s economic priorities.
Key Applications of the CSOL
The Core Skills Occupation List will be integral to the following visa programs:
- Skills in Demand Visa:
Launching on 7 December 2024, this new visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa, allowing employers to recruit skilled workers for roles listed on the CSOL.
- Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) Visa:
The CSOL will also apply to the Direct Entry stream of this permanent visa, providing a pathway for skilled migrants to secure long-term opportunities in Australia.
What’s Next?
Further reforms, including details about the upcoming Skills in Demand visa and the National Innovation visa, will be announced on 7 December 2024. These changes aim to create a more flexible and responsive migration system that meets Australia’s economic and innovation goals.
